Do you want to make your home eco-friendly ? Do you want to have an organic or green surrounding ? If you have limited space for growing plants and vegetation then growing a rooftop garden can be a good solution. The idea of a rooftop garden becomes more mandatory when you’re living in a building.
The growing of a rooftop garden can turn out to be a money-saving procedure for you as you can grow a variety of vegetables and plants in it. Prior to the building of a rooftop garden, apprehend whether you roof is strong enough to hold the plant containers. Also, a flat roof would complement the ease of growing plants and vegetables on your roof.
For growing a rooftop garden, you need to follow a series of steps. First, select one area of the roof where the plants would receive enough sunlight or optimum sunlight.
Once you’ve determined the concerned area then move onto the next step. Lay down the plastic sheeting on the intended area such that the plant containers can be easily placed there. The plastic sheathing would act as a water-proof barrier and would prevent the seepage of water into the internal walls and ceilings.
Next, you need to collect pots or garden boxes for growing plants. For this very purpose, a child’s wading pool can be employed. Alternatively, certain unusable items like kitchen sink, bath tubs etc. may serve the required purpose. Try to use a cemented sink or bathtub as that would complement the growth of vegetation in a better way.
Now, place the garden containers on the plastic sheeting. Fill up the soil in the containers and make way for the desired variety of plants and vegetables.
Mulch the top of the container around the plants with organic mulch such as grass clippings, leaves, tree bark etc. It would help the soil to sustain moisture and also, the soil would not dry out quickly. Water your rooftop garden everyday because container gardens dry out very quickly and hence, they require frequent watering.
Put the fertilizers or manure in the containers regularly. Be careful not to over-fertilize as it can burn the plants. To sustain beauty on your roof, the maintenance of the rooftop garden must be a regular feature in your itinerary.

If your home’s serenity has taken a back seat with a consistent prevalence of a foul smell then it is time to examine your trap and the associated primer. A trap is a plumbing element that stops waste gases to vent into the home. The trap primer helps in maintaining a certain water level in the trap such that the water seal in the trap is kept in check.
Frequently occurring faults in the trap setup calls for an immediate fixture or replacement of the trap primer. Hence, an inspection of the trap primer and the associated framework becomes mandatory.
Replacing a plumbing trap primer is not a tough task and requires a minimum of expertise provided that one possesses the correct logic and the associated plumbing tools such as wrenches, screwdrivers, hammers etc.
Start the project by acquiring a general perception about the working of the trap and how the trap primer would look once you locate it. Trap primers normally are the intermediate plumbing joints that allow water to go into the trap. Once problem is well apprehended, cut off the water supply from the main valve or the sink drain. Keep the supervision of an expert always in tact. Locate the trap primer by tearing down the drywall or some tiles from the primer’s site. The plumber who fixed it in the past may be consulted to locate the primer. The primer would generally be a small cylinder or a T-bar shaped component.
Once it is located, detach it from the fixture with the help of relevant pipe wrenches and hammer. Take it out and walk down to a local hardware/plumbing store to ask for a new one with the same functionality. Also a length of additional pipe and connectors should be bought if you’ve removed the primer by cutting the adjoining pipes.
Put the new trap primer in place. If the pipes are of copper then solder it well else apply glue on the joints. Make sure that the primer is installed perfectly allowing no room for any leakage.
Test the success of the installation by turning on the water supply to the trap primer. A normal operation of the trap primer and the affiliated components confirm the success of the project. Cement the tiles back on the wall.
As far as the maintenance of the trap primer is concerned, regular inspections are mandatory.

A lot of households face the dilemma of unexpected electric bills at the end of the month. They look surprised as the electricity usage denoted in their bills is higher than their expected figure. Such a situation may be accredited to the ignorant attitude of the homeowners.
Often, the homeowners pay minimum attention to the usage of electricity and they don’t monitor the working hours of their appliances. This results in electric bills that show peaking power consumption.
In order to maintain the record of your electricity usage, take a notepad and write down all the electrical appliances that you’re using on a daily basis. For example, the appliances such as air-conditioners, washing machines, water heaters, computer etc. need to be listed on the paper. Alternatively, you can create a spreadsheet to maintain the record in the digital form.
Under the ‘appliance’ field, write down the corresponding power consumption on daily, weekly and monthly basis. Besides these statistics, the cost per unit is also mentioned against each of these appliances. Alternatively, you can maintain digital data in the form of a spreadsheet.
Whenever you employ the services of a particular appliance then write down the usage (in hours) for the concerned appliance. Aggregate the daily results to generate the weekly power consumption by each appliance. Furthermore, the monthly energy consumption and the overall cost can be formulated from the statistics. Tally the figures with that of the official electric bill and compute the difference. Generally, a meager difference is accredited to miscalculations or misapprehensions.
Keep maintaining the figures for about 2-3 months until a definite pattern is explored. Such a study helps you in cutting on your electricity usage. Also, the appliances that are consuming more power than expected need to be inspected as well.
It is always a healthy practice to keep your home equipped with multiple sub-meters along with a main electric meter. The sub-meters monitor the power usage of different spaces of the home.
Furthermore, call an expert to inspect you meter if you suspect any irregularity in its normal operation.

Capacitors are the electrical elements that store power to fuel the working of the associated electrical appliances or devices. Like the other electrical components, they too are liable to energy dissipation.
Most homeowners throw out the capacitors without apprehending whether they’re actually bad or not. It is not a healthy practice to dispose the capacitors that are in usable form. To determine whether a capacitor is usable or not, carry out the required testing.
It is a regular checkup and doesn’t call for the involvement of an expert. However, proper precautions need to be taken while testing the concerned capacitor. Since the capacitors always hold some charge, they must be handled carefully.
If you suspect the efficiency of a capacitor then detach it from the associated electrical setup to test it. Don’t touch the capacitor with bare hands and make way for a voltage tester. Touch the capacitor with the probes of the voltage tester and observe the illumination of the neon bulb encapsulated in the tester apparatus. If the bulb illuminates brightly then a charged capacitor is determined. Grab an insulated screwdriver and rest it on the capacitor body to absorb excess charges.
Once you’ve dissociated the affected capacitor from its associated electrical fixture then arrange for a full-fledged test of the capacitor. To do so, purchase or rent a capacitor testing device. Plug the cord of the device into the outlet and switch it on. Adjust the selector to the ‘ohm’ scale to determine the resistance of the capacitor.
Bring the leads of the tester together and touch their leading ends to each other. Alter the reading on the meter in such a way that the needle points to zero when the probes are touched to each other. If the resulting observation deters from the zero mark then adjust the wheel on the meter. A ‘zero’ reading ensures the sound working state of the concerned apparatus.
Now, move onto the actual task of testing the affected capacitor. Plug in the tester leads in place and take their probe ends towards the concerned capacitor. Connect the tester probes to the terminals of the capacitor such that the red-colored lead connects to the left terminal and the black-colored lead touches the right side terminal of the capacitor.
If the needle deflects to the right side and returns to infinity then the capacitor holds some charge. If however the needle veers towards the right and doesn’t return back to infinity then the capacitor is considered shorted out or bad.
