I’d like to go volunteer in Haiti, but cannot find any information on the subject. The red cross is not accepting volunteers. Also, I can’t go right now, but spring break is around the corner, and I’m sure they will still need help then.

Try this site. It has numbers to call to volunteer: http://www.cidi.org/incident/haiti-10a/

That’s very kind, but you would be in danger. Your health insurance is not valid in Haiti, and you have no transportation there or around. There is no food, water, sanitation, or electricity for anyone. If you were to be injured, for example by breaking your arm, you would have no painkillers, no doctor, no treatment, and no way to get home.
See if you have a Red Cross chapter on campus; if not, go to http://www.redcross.org and find the closest one. Start taking classes now to become a response volunteer for local and US disasters in the future.

Please check with this organization: http://www.negesfoundation.org
They are sending a delegation in February and looking for volunteers. See the email below for more information:

    Subject: Please, help Leogane!
    Hello All,
I am not the type of person that likes to send mass emails asking for things or promoting others. Nevertheless, desperate times call for desperate needs.
Since 2007, my husband has been working with a humanitarian organization to help the city of Leogane in Haiti. They have built a modest school (which collapsed during the earthquake, with some of the students inside) and we have sent clothes, medicine and food to the people from the village. Also, we recently started a project that was 2 years in the making: A little plastic collection factory that would export PET to the U.S. and China. This company was mostly planned to provide the workers with the necessary money to sustain their families, doing it with dignity and pride. Now, all this is destroyed.
During the past few days we have been awaiting to receive news from our friends, just to let us know that they are still alive. Some of them have made it, and now they face yet another problem: Survival. Leogane has been isolated from the rest of Haiti, and no aid is getting to this little town. Our friends are burying their friends with as much dignity as they can; they are drinking from an old, polluted well; and they are just waiting and praying for somebody to get there before the food supplies are gone. They might have saved their lives from the earthquake and now they might die of starvation and illness.
We are putting together a delegation to go in February and anybody that has the time, economic means and energy to do so is welcome to come. Feel free to contact me or any of the people from the organization in order to find out more about this upcoming mission. You can also donate directly through the Neges Foundation website:

I appreciate your attention and I cannot thank you enough for caring!
P.S. Please, pass this message on to your friends, family, colleagues, etc. Here in China, I am blocked from the social networks, blogs, etc, so I am doing it old-school… by email. Thank you!
